Alianza Americas, a network of organizations led by Latin American and Caribbean migrants in the United States, expresses concern over the unresolved issues highlighted in Andrés Manuel López Obrador's Sixth Government Report. At the same time, these reports serve as tools for transparency and accountability. Mexican migrants in the U.S. demand more decisive actions to ensure safety and protect citizens' rights both within the country and abroad.

Violence by the State and private actors is one of the main challenges facing Mexico. It's not just about State violence or organized crime, but also violence within family and intimate relationships. Gender-based violence remains one of the major unaddressed issues of López Obrador's administration. The promises to tackle corruption and dismantle the power of drug trafficking have proven insufficient, with the power and influence of these groups increasing, affecting the lives and safety of Mexican families both within the country and abroad. ”There is no "lasting peace" as President López Obrador claims. The rise in homicides and disappearances during his term, along with gender-based violence, are of great concern,” stated Dulce Guzmán, Executive Director of Alianza Americas. Mexico faces significant challenges in the upcoming term under Claudia Sheinbaum's leadership. “We trust that the inclusion of a gender perspective in addressing violence will yield concrete results in prevention and protection. Violence is one of the causes of migration and must be a priority,” Guzmán added.

“According to the government report, remittances reached a historic high of $63.32 billion in 2023, highlighting the importance of migrants to the Mexican economy. However, this economic impact must translate into greater political participation from abroad. We need permanent policies and spaces that allow Mexicans abroad to influence decision-making that affects the well-being of our families and communities of origin. It is time for our voices to be heard on the national agenda,” emphasizes Sandra Díaz, Narrative Coordinator at Alianza Americas and Founder of the Immigrant Progress Center in Illinois.

Additionally, among these issues, dissatisfaction with the healthcare system in Mexico is highlighted. “Improving the public health system was an unmet promise during López Obrador’s administration. Access to health services and medications remains a critical challenge,” states Zorayda Ávila, Climate Justice Coordinator at Alianza Americas. "Communities in Mexico not only face the consequences of violence and lack of healthcare services but also the devastating effects of climate change. The new government must be committed to overcoming the inequalities that continue to affect the living conditions of the Mexican population and to protect their rights,” Ávila adds.
