Chicago, IL – Today, the Biden-Harris administration announced an 18-month extension for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) beneficiaries from El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Haiti to re-register for the program. This announcement comes as we near the original deadline of September 10, 2023 for individuals from El Salvador to re-register for the program. With this announcement, the re-registration deadline for TPS beneficiaries from El Salvador is extended to March 9, 2025; beneficiaries from Hondurans and Nicaraguans will have until July 5, 2025; and beneficiaries from Haiti will have until August 3, 2024.

“We appreciate this timely decision by the Biden administration that will immediately benefit El Salvador’s TPS population. In recent weeks, together with our member organizations, we expressed our concern about the low level of re-registrations. This was due, in part, to the fact that the period for informing people was very short,” said Yanira Arias, Director of Campaigns for Alianza Americas. “Faced with this situation, together with several of our member organizations, we developed an information campaign and advocated in Congress. We achieved the support of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, as well as the support of allied organizations that joined us in our call to the Biden administration to extend the re-registration period.”

With this announcement, TPS beneficiaries from El Salvador who wish to keep their immigration protection in effect, must renew their registration no later than March 9, 2025. Failure to do so could result in serious consequences, including loss of authorization to work in the U.S. and exposure to detention and deportation. “We urge TPS holders from El Salvador not to wait until the last day, this is a rigorous and time-consuming process. Don’t put off tomorrow what you can do today. Visit your trusted organization.” said Abel Nuñez, Executive Director of the Central American Resource Center of Washington, DC (CARECEN DC).

This announcement also included the current TPS designations for Nepal and Sudan. For beneficiaries from Nepal, the re-registration period runs until June 24, 2025 and for Sudan until April 19, 2025.
