Chicago, IL- Alianza Americas, a national network of more than 55 organizations led by Latin American and Caribbean migrants living in the United States, rejects President Trump's decision to withdraw the United States from international organizations, conventions, and treaties that he considers contrary to U.S. interests. The United States will withdraw from five organizations, 26 hybrid treaties, and 31 spaces within the United Nations.
The Trump administration's decision is indicative of its position in the global context and is consistent with its regrettable National Security Strategy. Many of the instruments listed create forums and spaces for the exchange of ideas between states and with stakeholders, including civil society, academia, research centers, and other regional and global bodies. With this decision, the U.S. misses an opportunity to exchange ideas and visions and to influence regional and global spaces. It is another step toward isolation in the global context and reflects its attitude of imposing rather than building agreements and consensus.
Another important feature of the list is the treaties related to climate change, sustainable development, and biodiversity. As Alianza Americas has said before, denying climate change and insisting on fossil fuels is a harmful strategy for the US population and the world. It is a selfish, obtuse, and irresponsible approach to future generations. This approach will indeed deepen the root causes of migration by accelerating climate displacement, destroying livelihoods, and widening global economic inequities, forcing communities, particularly in the Global South, to migrate in order to survive.
The list also highlights organizations and efforts dedicated to education, science, and culture. This is also consistent with the Trump administration's fear of knowledge, debate, and critical views of societies and their governments. Finally, the list includes initiatives focused on victims of armed conflict and on peacebuilding and peacekeeping. Their inclusion reflects the U.S.'s abandonment of fundamental commitments to humanity.
This action closes the door to dialogue and collaboration. Isolating the US is not the solution. The rest of the states, civil society, academia, regional and global organizations, and research centers will continue to meet, reach agreements, and advance consensus. This action does not destroy multilateralism, a necessary ingredient of the world order. The United States and its people lose with this decision.
