June 19, 2024- Alianza Americas’ Leadership Institute participants visited the Haitian American Museum of Chicago to learn more about Haiti's history and the country's current political state. Participants toured the museum after a discussion led by Tessa Petit, Executive Director at Florida Immigrant Coalition. They ended by sharing their reflections over delicious Haitian food from a local restaurant in Chicago, Haitian Food by Maggy (foodbymaggy).

As a network of Latin American and Caribbean immigrant-led and serving organizations, Alianza Americas recognizes the importance of cultivating spaces of dialogue that center the experience of Afro-descendent communities across the Americas and the Caribbean. Last year, the staff and Board of Directors of Alianza Americas visited The Legacy Museum as part of their annual retreat. During this visit, we had the opportunity to learn about the history of slavery and anti-Black racism in the United States.

This Juneteenth, we recognize there is still much work to do to dismantle white supremacy and racism, including in our countries of origin and Latino communities in the U.S., and we’re committed to addressing colorism and discrimination within our society.
