Partnerships for inclusion: Local experiences with migrants

2026

As part of Somos Comunidad, Alianza Americas, in collaboration with the American Immigration Council, hosted this dialogue on the role of public-private partnerships in the effective inclusion of migrants at the local level.

Micaela McConnell, State and Local Policy Associate at the American Immigration Council and Lola Okunola, Regional Director at Welcoming America joined us to discuss Gateways for Growth, an initiative created by their two organizations that aims to provide applied research and technical assistance to local governments, community organizations, and private sector actors to strengthen the inclusion of migrants in their communities. They talked about the origins of the program; presented case studies highlighting local experiences and positive outcomes; discussed how the initiatives support by the program contribute to changing narratives and generating public and political support at the local level; and shared current challenges and future prospects for the inclusion of migrants.

Since its launch in 2016, Gateways for Growth has supported more than 70 localities in 35 states.
