Somos Comunidad: Costa Rican civil society's efforts for the inclusion of Nicaraguan migrants

2025

Costa Rica has historically been a key destination for Nicaraguans seeking refuge, security and better opportunities. Currently, it is estimated that close to half a million Nicaraguans live in the country, many of them facing barriers to their social, economic and cultural integration.

Join us for a virtual conversation with Maris Stella Fernandez, president of Fundación SIFAIS, a community organization based in La Carpio, San José, that has transformed the lives of thousands of migrants through education, personal development and opportunities for inclusion.

This conversation will be moderated by Lina Translavina-Stover, executive director of our member organization Heartland Workers Center, and will be an opportunity to reflect on:

  • Challenges faced by Nicaraguan migrants in Costa Rica
  • The fundamental role of community organizations in the promotion of inclusion
  • Possibilities for collaboration between civil society and government.

Day: Thursday, July 17, 2025

Time: 10 a.m. PT | 11 a.m. Central America | 12 p.m. CT | 1 p.m. ET
