Chicago, IL – Alianza Americas strongly condemns the revocation of the recent extension of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Venezuela, provided during the former Biden administration last month. This is a devastating decision that will have dire consequences for hundreds of thousands of Venezuelan nationals who have built their lives in the United States. This policy reversal disregards the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Venezuela and places countless families at risk of deportation, instability, and economic hardship.

“Venezuelan migrants have become an integral part of our communities. They are our neighbors, co-workers, caregivers, and should be recognized for their societal contributions,” said Helena Olea, Deputy  for Alianza Americas. “Ongoing political repression, economic collapse, widespread human rights violations, and a humanitarian crisis—marked by food and medicine shortages—make Venezuela unsafe for return, warranting continued TPS protection.” concluded Olea.

TPS is a critical tool that offers relief to individuals fleeing violence, economic collapse, and political repression. The Biden administration’s decision to extend the 2023 designation was made after a very careful review and is published in the federal register. It is currently unsafe to return or deport people back.

“The Trump administration’s decision to revoke the TPS extension for Venezuela is deeply troubling,” said Yanira Arias, Migrant Justice Coordinator at Alianza Americas. “TPS has provided Venezuelan families with a lifeline, allowing them to work legally, contribute to their communities, and live without fear of deportation. We urge the administration to reconsider and take action to provide stability and safety for Venezuelans who cannot safely return home,” concluded Arias.

Alianza Americas calls on policymakers to reverse this harmful decision. Now is the moment for state and local governments, faith leaders, and other community voices to speak up for our neighbors. We stand in solidarity with Venezuelan immigrants and all those fighting for justice and dignity.
