Alianza Americas 2022 Leadership Assembly Kicks Off November 11, Bringing Together Migrant Leaders and Allies from Across U.S.

October 31, 2022 – Starting Friday, November 11, leaders from the multiracial coalition that make up the Alianza Americas network will congregate in Washington, D.C. as part of the organization’s biannual Leadership Assembly: #SomosComunidad. Given the likelihood that the November midterms will result in major political recompositions in parts of the country, representatives from the 54 grassroots groups that make up the Alianza Americas coalition will strategize over how our communities can best respond to an adjusted political landscape.

The event will start off with two in-person/virtual panels that will analyze the midterm election results, and the implications for Latin American, Indigenous and Afro-Latino communities in the Americas. These panels are open to the general public.

More information about the public panels is available below.

WHEN: November 11, Friday, 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. EST

WHERE:

IN-PERSON: Hilton Washington DC Capitol Hill

525 New Jersey Ave NW, Washington DC 20001

VIRTUAL: Register here

Both options (in-person/virtual) will have interpretation in English and Spanish.

WHAT:

Panel 1: The future of democracy in the U.S. post midterm elections (9:00 a.m. – 10:45 a.m. EST)

A reflection on what we should make of the U.S. midterm election results, and the subsequent implications for the well-being of Latin American migrant populations and other communities throughout the country.

Panelists: to be announced

Panel 2: What would a better U.S. policy towards Latin America look like? (11:00 a.m. – 12: 15 p.m. EST)

A discussion about the results of various recent elections across the Americas, and the potential impact of the U.S. midterms on the country’s foreign policy on Latin America. What are the implications for building transnational advocacy proposals that increase the well-being of our communities?

Panelists

  • Miguel Tinker Salas, Professor of Latin American History and Chicano/a Latino/a Studies at Pomona College in Claremont, California.
  • Epsy Campbell, Chair of the UN Permanent Forum on People of African Descent, former vice president of Costa Rica.
