Alianza Americas, a network of organizations led by immigrants of Latin American and Caribbean origin in the United States, expresses its deep concern about the recurrence and intensity of violence in Haiti. The recent massacre of some 200 people in Port-au-Prince, attacked for their religious beliefs, is an alarming example of the widespread violence and the failure of the state to protect its population. We reaffirm that no human being should be forced to return to Haiti under these conditions.

Haiti faces immeasurable security challenges. In the face of the violence and institutional collapse facing the country, deportees will face great risks to survive. The recent massacre perpetrated as a form of religious persecution against voodoo practitioners is a reminder that no one is safe in the country. Gangs continue to control much of the urban areas, exacerbating insecurity and limiting the possibilities for a dignified life.

Alianza Americas calls on the Biden administration to issue an immediate re-designation of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haiti. Protecting the Haitian population in the United States is the just and necessary action at this time. The Biden administration must protect Haitians from being deported to conditions of widespread violence, with no recourse or actor capable of protecting them.
